Types and Causes of Hearing Loss - Let's Know the Insights

There could be several contributing factors for hearing loss. While some of these could be prevented by a healthy lifestyle, most of these cannot be avoided.

Loss of hearing, though a gradual process most of the time can also be a sudden process due to accidents. The first signs are always the same – difficulty in following conversations, trouble to understand high pitched sounds and need to turn up the radio / TV etc.

There are two main types of hearing loss – sensorineural and conductive.
Sensorineural relates to problems in the inner ear and conductive refers to damage of the ear canal, middle ear or the drums.

Mixed hearing loss is a combination of the two processes and is much more complicated. However, expert professional audiologists at Amplifon will be able to identify the nature and cause of the problem through high tech diagnosis. While you will get to know the exact cause of your condition, the doctor can suggest if treatment requires a surgery, medicine or hearing aid devices.
There could be several causes of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, which include: Conductive Hearing Loss
  • Ear wax build-up
  • Fluid build-up in middle ear
  • Perforation in the ear drum
  • Middle ear infection
  • Abnormal bone growth (otosclerosis)
  • A foreign blockage
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
  • Family history of hearing loss
  • Drug treatments
  • Viral infection
  • Head injury
  • Any traumatic exposure to loud noise
Ageing is perhaps the most important factor in partial hearing loss. This condition is also known as presbyacusis and typically surfaces after we reach 40 years. There is no permanent cure but hearing aids can help get over the incapability. Noise and genetics are other reasons that could make the ear functioning improper. Hearing aids in all cases offer substantial benefits.
